As an Occupational Therapist specializing in pelvic floor therapy, I understand that starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions and concerns. One common and somewhat awkward question I often hear is: “Do I need to shave for pelvic floor physical therapy?” or “Can I come if I have my period?” Today, I want to address this question and help you feel comfortable and confident as you embark on your pelvic floor therapy journey.

What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Before we dive into the specifics, let’s briefly revisit what pelvic floor therapy is. Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized treatment aimed at improving the strength and function of the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles play a crucial role in supporting the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. When these muscles are weakened or dysfunctional, it can lead to issues such as incontinence, pelvic pain, and sexual dysfunction.

What You Need to Attend Pelvic Floor Therapy

Comfortable Clothing

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your sessions. This will make it easier for you to move around and for your therapist to perform any necessary physical assessments or manual therapy techniques.

Medical History and Documentation

Bring any relevant medical records, a list of medications you’re taking, and any previous test results that may be pertinent to your condition. This information helps your therapist get a complete picture of your health and tailor the treatment accordingly.

A Willingness to Learn and Engage

Pelvic floor therapy is a collaborative process. Come with an open mind, ready to learn about your body and engage in the exercises and techniques recommended by your therapist. Your active participation is crucial for the success of the therapy.

The Question of Grooming: Do I Need to Shave?

Now, let’s address the question that might be lingering in your mind: “Do I need to shave for pelvic floor physical therapy?” The simple and honest answer is no, you do not need to shave. Here’s why:

Come As You Are

Your therapist is a healthcare professional who is focused on your health and well-being, not your grooming habits. Whether you shave, wax, trim, or let your hair grow naturally, it doesn’t affect the quality of care you receive. The important thing is that you feel comfortable and at ease.

You Are Beautiful and Perfect the Way You Are

It’s natural to feel self-conscious about our bodies, but it’s important to remember that you are beautiful just the way you are. Your therapist is there to support you, not judge you. Embrace your natural self and focus on the positive steps you’re taking towards better health.

Can I Come When I Have My Period?

We get this question very often, as most women will typically experience at least one period during their time in therapy! Therefore, the answer is of course! It is actually very beneficial for you to come during this time as there are great benefits from many different manual techniques for easing discomfort, bloating, or other common symptoms during this time. As for internal exam or internal manual release techniques – this is completely up to you! Your therapist is comfortable with performing any internal manual techniques during or not during your period. However, we understand that you may not feel comfortable with this during this time! There is always plenty of other things to work on and do so we want you to feel comfortable discussing this with your therapist!

Building a Comfortable and Trusting Relationship

Pelvic floor therapy involves sensitive areas of the body, and it’s essential to build a comfortable and trusting relationship with your therapist. Here are some tips to help you feel more at ease:

Open Communication

Feel free to express any concerns or discomfort you may have. A good therapist will listen to your worries and adjust the treatment plan to ensure you feel safe and respected.

Understand the Process

Ask questions about the procedures and techniques used during therapy. Understanding what to expect can alleviate anxiety and help you feel more in control.

Trust the Expertise

Remember that your therapist is a trained professional with experience in pelvic floor health. Trust their expertise and know that their primary goal is to help you improve your quality of life.

Conclusion

Starting pelvic floor therapy is a positive step towards better health and well-being. Remember, there’s no need to worry about grooming before your sessions or not being able to come for other mother nature reasons! Come as you are, knowing that you are beautiful and perfect just the way you are. Your therapist is there to support you on your journey, providing personalized care to help you achieve your health goals.

Pelvic floor therapy can make a significant difference in managing issues like incontinence, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, and so much more! With the right approach and a comfortable, trusting relationship with your therapist, you can look forward to improved pelvic health and a better quality of life.
